Much of the land targeted for
the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan and the Indian River Lagoon Plan lies within the Treasure Coast Greenway.
SCL is working to have the local governments in Florida's Treasure Coast
Region adopt a Regional Plan to protect and restore the Treasure Coast Greenway that will make it easier - and a
priority - to acquire the land for CERP and the IRL Plan.
Restoring and connecting the gaps between the CERP
lands as part of the Greenway will significantly increase the amount of natural water storage and cleansing.
SCL supports using every possible tool to preserve the land, as recommended
by the Governor's Committee for a Sustainable Treasure Coast. As a result, SCL is actively
supporting the Martin County Parks and Recreation proposal for funding acquisition through a sales tax referendum, the St.
Lucie County Rural Land Stewardship Program, and the Martin County Land Pattern Study.
SCL is working with local conservationists to establish Community Land Conservancies
to identify the environmentally valuable lands and agricultural lands each Community wants to protect, to acquire rights to
those lands, and to manage them in perpetuity in coordination with the CERP and IRL Plans.
